Newsletter July/August 2008

Hello Friends,

The last newsletter was welcoming Spring, and here we are already into the first weeks of Summer! For my family, Summer in Boxborough means visiting the library (the Summer reading program is great!), day camp at Flerra Field (entering K-7th grades), gardening, swimming, and playing outside. Check out the great BFN dates we have planned too! I'm sure we will see you around town.

May was a very big month for babies! With so many babies, we are ready to start planning monthly events for the class of 2013! (see page 4) Our first event will be a brunch at Monica's house just for babies and their moms. Thanks for hosting Monica! I look forward to meeting all of the littlest BFN members.

In May, we celebrated Mother's Day and Monica with our Mousse and Masseuse massage party. It was a great success, and we will do it again soon. The Arboretum was a fun place to visit with the kids, and I encourage everyone to check it out this month as everything should be bursting with color and life. It's a free, easy way to take your kids short trail walk. Be sure to check out our Web site for a great list of more outdoor destinations that First Connections put together.

In June, BFN hosted the Senior Luncheon and music circles at Fifer's day. Both events were very well received. Janet and Christie put much effort into making our Fifer's day booth a success. Thanks ladies!

On June 26, BFN hosted a library story time and ice cream party for 11 kids entering kindergarten in 2008. Kids and parents enjoyed getting to know each other. Ellen has organized two more events this summer to support our newest scholars. Great job Ellen!

We are already thinking about the BFN Halloween Party. If you have any ideas to contribute or would like to help make it happen, let us know!

Time for Summer Fun!

²     DO YOU YAHOO?!

We really encourage you to join the Yahoo Group as we will be incorporating impromptu playdates and small events by using this service. This tool allows every member to say, “hey my family is going to this event, any one else interested?” We are trying to foster connections between children and families outside the scope of the larger-scale BFN events. Please contact Jennifer Hoff with questions! To register: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Boxborough_Family_Network/

UPCOMING BFN EVENTS

SENIOR LUNCHEON RE-CAP

Thank you BFN for pulling together to serve the senior luncheon. Cooking the simple, delicious meal was a pleasure in Karen Robinson’s well-equipped kitchen. Thank you Karen for hosting Monica, Ellen, Karen and Jen (and all the children!) for food prep day. Our menu included oven-fried chicken, 3 bean salad, watermelon, dinner rolls, and yummy blondies and cookies It felt good to provide the seniors in our community with such a wholesome summertime meal. We look forward to doing it again next June.

We also provided four vases of cut flowers (most from our own gardens!) for the centerpieces and door prizes.

The seniors packed up to-go plates, and there was nothing left over! They also delivered plates of food to those who called in sick and couldn’t make it. Such a nice group of people, and such a successful event!

Thanks to the following people for their generous contributions:

Nicole, Monica, Karen, and Jen for the cut flowers; Leah for the watermelon; Lisa G for the sliced onions; Wendy W for the kidney beans; Lindsay P for the green beans; Mary for the wax beans; Nicole for the butter; Jen H for the rolls; Ellen for the Blondies; Monica for the cookies; Jen for the non-hydrogenated palm shortening, oil, salt, pepper; and Karen for the vinegar and sugar.

And BFN purchased 30 pounds of chicken.

A very special thanks to Jen Hoff who spent a lot of time and energy organizing this event!

FIFER’S DAY THANK YOU

Fifer’s Day was a great success this year! After decorating ourselves, we paraded with bikes and strollers to Flerra Field with our awesome new BFN banner. Many thanks to Ellen Hickey and Tracey Sierra for fixing up the banner and giving it new life! Once at Flerra, we had a lot of fun with both of our musical performers, Ed Morgan and Alex Andrews. It was great to see so many members come by the booth and say hi. We met a few new members as well.

The biggest thank you of all goes to Janet Connolly and Christie Smith for organizing and planning the whole thing. They really put on a great event on behalf of BFN! Among other things, Janet made up all of the signage and handouts to advertise, and Christie organized the parade, donated all of the parade decorations, and got all the wonderful raffle prizes. Many thanks also to Dori Morrisson and Monica Burke for letting us use their tents, Zhu Xiao for volunteering at the booth, to Monica for donating the balloons, and to Chris, Neill, Dean, and Janet for setting up!

We would also like to thank all of the companies who supported us through donations and raffle prizes: Family Friends Vet and Boxborough Insurance Agency sponsored the musicians, and Nitty Gritty Auto Detail, the Thoreau Club, Not Your Average Joe’s, Idylwidle Farms, Atir Day Spa, and Kara Osselmann (Barefoot Books) donated generous raffle prizes.
